  • Read the prospectus.
  • Professional mutual fund management lends expertise and oversight, but it is not a guarantee.
  • Know the objective of your fund and understand how much risk it exposes you to.
  • Get independent input about the track record and quality of your fund.
  • All mutual funds charge fees, even no-load funds. Make sure you know what you're paying for.
  • Choose wisely and expect to stick with it through a few ups and downs.
