Reception draws diverse potential candidates
Published Date: 06/01/2006
The Office of Workforce Diversity hosted its first Private Networking Reception (PNR) on May 10 in Atlanta. PNRs, a progressive method to connect diverse external talent with select managers, are just one of several initiatives designed to help managers meet their Workforce Diversity goals. The ING event was well attended with 20 Worksite and Retail managers and 21 invitees.
“The candidates were impressed with the level of senior leaders in attendance. ING’s commitment to diversity was evident based on managers’ engagement and personal outreach at what they called a ‘very classy event,’” said Larry Milan, head of Talent Management, Diversity and HR Consulting. “It’s also important to note that these candidates were chosen based on their strong experience, skill sets and educational attainment as measured against pre-submitted job profiles specified by ING business unit leaders.”
Catherine Smith, head of USFS Retail Financial Services, was the keynote speaker for the evening and discussed ING and its commitment to diversity. “For ING, diversity is more than an ideal, it’s our everyday business reality,” Smith said. “We also understand that it’s important that our workforce properly reflects the diversity of our customer base. Having a diverse workforce also supports our brand message of ‘easier,’ and we are firmly committed to finding the right talent to make it ‘easier’ for our customers to do business with us.”
In a follow-up survey of invitees, 100 percent of the respondents affirmed that if an opportunity was presented, they would be interested in coming to work for ING, and that they would like to receive information about future networking events.
“Feedback we’ve gotten from both the managers and invitees has been extremely positive,” according to Jacqui Robertson, head of Workforce Diversity. “Managers have already taken steps to interview select candidates. At the end of the day, the proof is in the results. I believe that progressive and proactive recruitment methods like PNRs provide ING with an edge in our search for diverse talent and therefore plans are under way for a second event in New York City.”
Comments from PNR attendees
- I have been to many networking events but none with an atmosphere so relaxed, intimate and friendly. I enjoyed detailed conversations with executives who were down to earth, approachable and knowledgeable about their business. What a wonderful idea!
- Needless to say, it was a very classy event. I got to see ING in a totally new light. I feel honored to have been chosen to attend it.
- I unquestionably want to express my interest in working with your company in the near future. Throughout the night, I gathered a sense of responsibility and learned in-depth some of ING’s business perspectives for the future through our conversation.
- I enjoyed networking with everyone and admire your company for having this type of an event. To me, this demonstrates ING’s commitment to diversity and that it’s just not a word to you.
